چکیده

In this paper we are concerned with hyponormality and subnormality of block Toeplitz operators acting on the vector-valued Hardy space H Cn of the unit circle. Firstly, we establish a tractable and explicit criterion on the hyponormality of block Toeplitz operators having bounded type symbols via the triangularization theorem for compressions of the shift operator. Secondly, we consider the gap between hyponormality and subnormality for block Toeplitz operators. This is closely related to Halmos’s Problem 5: Is every subnormal Toeplitz operator either normal or analytic ? We show that if Φ is a matrix-valued rational function whose coanalytic part has a coprime factorization then every hyponormal Toeplitz operator TΦ whose square is also hyponormal must be either normal or analytic. Thirdly, using the subnormal theory of block Toeplitz operators, we give an answer to the following “Toeplitz completion” problem: Find the unspecified Toeplitz entries of the partial block Toeplitz matrix

A Subnormal Toeplitz Completion Problem

We give a brief survey of subnormality and hyponormality of Toeplitz operators on the vector-valued Hardy space of the unit circle. We also solve the following subnormal Toeplitz completion problem: Complete the unspecified rational Toeplitz operators (i.e., the unknown entries are rational Toeplitz operators) of the partial block Toeplitz matrix

Hyponormality of Bounded-Type Toeplitz Operators

In this paper we deal with the hyponormality of Toeplitz operators with matrixvalued symbols. The aim of this paper is to provide a tractable criterion for the hyponormality of bounded-type Toeplitz operators TΦ (i.e., the symbol Φ ∈ L ∞ Mn is a matrix-valued function such that Φ and Φ∗ are of bounded type). In particular, we get a much simpler criterion for the hyponormality of TΦ when the co-...

Existence of Non-subnormal Polynomially Hyponormal Operators

In 1950, P. R. Halmos, motivated in part by the successful development of the theory of normal operators, introduced the notions of subnormality and hyponormality for (bounded) Hilbert space operators. An operator T is subnormal if it is the restriction of a normal operator to an invariant subspace; T is hyponormal if T*T > TT*. It is a simple matrix calculation to verify that subnormality impl...

Block Toeplitz operators with rational symbols

Toeplitz operators (or equivalently, Wiener-Hopf operators; more generally, block Toeplitz operators; and particularly, Toeplitz determinants) are of importance in connection with a variety of problems in physics, and in particular, in the field of quantum mechanics. For example, a study of solvable models in quantum mechanics uses the spectral theory of Toeplitz operators (cf. [Pr]); the one-d...

Hyponormality of Trigonometric Toeplitz Operators

In this paper we establish a tractable and explicit criterion for the hyponormality of arbitrary trigonometric Toeplitz operators, i.e., Toeplitz operators Tφ with trigonometric polynomial symbols φ. Our criterion involves the zeros of an analytic polynomial f induced by the Fourier coefficients of φ. Moreover the rank of the selfcommutator of Tφ is computed from the number of zeros of f in the...
